Joint Organisation Net Zero Accelerator (JONZA) Program
The CRJO net zero program supports our 11 member councils to deliver emissions reduction in our region. This program is proudly supported by the NSW Government through the Joint Organisation Net Zero Acceleration (JONZA) Program.
The program aims to increase capacity within the member Councils to accelerate emission reductions as well as create a regional opportunity to share expertise to improve project implementation efficiency.
Together we work to address the top five emission sources for councils:
- Secondary emissions from purchasing fossil fuel-generated electricity
- Direct emissions from waste water treatment facilities
- Direct emissions from landfill facilities, including legacy landfill sites (no longer operational)
- Direct emissions from fossil fuel use in fleet, including vehicles and equipment
- Direct emissions from gas appliances
How to get to net zero – Knowledge, guidance and advice for NSW Councils
CRJO has developed a guide to support NSW councils understand, plan and progress toward net zero operational emissions. Produced with support from the NSW Government through the JONZA program, the guide aims to support staff in all NSW councils to commence their journey towards net zero emissions.
Every Council is different. Variations in size, geography, services, infrastructure, and financial capacity mean that there is no single pathway to net zero. This guide provides a flexible framework that Councils can adapt or tailor to their own circumstances, priorities, and resourcing levels.
The guide provides an overview of net zero, what it means and our obligations to achieve net zero emissions. It outlines a wide variety of actions and projects that can be employed to actively reduce emissions, classified by the operational sectors of councils that would implement them. Each item is supported by links to advice and resources, and a toolkit is provided at the end of the guide.
Although every Council and every area of NSW is different, there are enough common threads for us to be able to help each other in achieving Net Zero. This document will help you find the quick wins, and give you the resources to take on the more challenging ones.
